From this talk, Bekah was able to see the take away finding value in what we produce for the sake of the product being itself, simply from Jia’s advice and her down to earth personality. Bekah described the transition from being there with her peers to suddenly being in the presence of a New York Times bestselling author as nerve-wracking, but after reading an excerpt from her essay “Losing Faith and Finding Ecstasy in Houston Texas,” Jia spoke about how she accidentally found herself topping the charts in 2019. She admitted that she is tired of Zoom meetings, and had no idea what to expect of a virtual reading however, it was immediately clear to her that the medium through which the event took place did not matter-an enjoyable hour with Jia was in store for them that evening. Rebekah admired the rare opportunity to meet face-to-face with a writer like Jia Tolentino, which was not taken for granted by many students within the English Department.
The following is thoughts provided by Bekah and Jack about what it was like to attend a reading in a virtual environment. There was an outstanding turn out of professors, staff, and students who attended the reading, including Junior Nursing major, English minor Rebekah Blanchard, and Senior English Writing major Jack Vandergriend. After an introduction by Professor Jake Andrews, Jia read excerpts from her book Trick Mirror: Reflections on Self-Delusion, a collection of nine essays. On the 11th of November, Whitworth University had the pleasure of getting to host a reading over Zoom with writer and editor Jia Tolentino.
